Block accuses French billionaire of spying on him

Carson Block, the founder of activist hedge fund Muddy Waters, claims he was spied on by the boss of French retail group Casino

Exclusive

Jean-Charles Naouri, the chief executive of Casino, has been accused of orchestrating a year-long spying operation against Block and his staff, according to the allegations made in an interview with French business daily Challenges.

The alleged scheme is said to have involved false information presented to Temarii by Jean-Charles Brisard, a controversial consultant whose expertise in terrorism financing has been questioned by intelligence experts.

The claims have been denied by Naouri and Casino, which said that the allegations were "unfounded and defamatory".

Block has released a video which he says shows Brisard meeting with Tavita Horobin, a private investigator and former employee of the UK's Serious Fraud Office.

The video depicts an Oct 30 meeting at a Manhattan hotel that Muddy Waters said was requested by the man claiming to be Horobin but who the Journal said was Jean-Charles Brisard.
